Paint Correction in Mount Airy, NC

5-Star Rated by Mount Airy Drivers

If your paint looks dull under direct sunlight, or you're noticing cobweb-like scratches across the hood and doors, what you're seeing is swirl marks — and no amount of wax or spray detailer is going to make them disappear. Bobbitt Auto Detailing & Ceramic Coatings has spent five-plus years correcting paint for drivers across Mount Airy and Surry County, and we've built over 200 five-star Google reviews doing it the right way: fully indoors, under lighting built specifically to catch what a driveway or a quick buff-and-go shop would miss. This page covers everything you need to know before booking — what paint correction actually does, the three packages we offer, our full process from consultation to pickup, and the questions worth asking any shop before you hand over your keys.

Drivers make the trip to our Mount Airy shop from all over Surry County, including Dobson, Pilot Mountain, and Elkin. We don't offer mobile paint correction — the process is too sensitive to environment to do it any other way.

Paint correction reflects the careful process used throughout our Mount Airy detailing shop.

What Paint Correction Actually Fixes

Every clear coat picks up damage over time — fine scratches from automatic car washes, oxidation from UV exposure, water spots that etched in before anyone got to them. Individually, none of it looks like much. Stacked together over a few years, it's what makes a car look tired even when it's mechanically fine and only a few years old.

Paint correction is a machine polishing process that physically levels that damage out of the clear coat, rather than covering it up. A trained technician works a rotary or dual-action polisher across every panel with a specific pad and compound combination, cutting down just enough of the clear coat to erase the imperfections sitting in it — then refining that surface until it reflects light the way it did when the car was new.

One thing worth knowing going in: paint correction addresses everything sitting in the clear coat — swirls, oxidation, haze, water spots — but it isn't the tool for a rock chip or a scratch that's gone all the way through to bare metal or primer. Good news there: we handle minor rock chips in-house with touch-up paint, so you don't need to go anywhere else for those. Anything more severe than that is a bodywork repair. For most daily-driven vehicles, though, correction alone fixes the majority of what's actually dulling the finish.

Why Waxes, Fillers & DIY Kits Don't Hold Up

A quick search for swirl mark removal turns up a flood of scratch-removing waxes, fillers, and one-step DIY correction kits — worth understanding what they actually do.

They Mask Damage Instead of Removing It

Most of these products work by filling in the scratch with an oil or wax-based compound so it's less visible under normal light. That's not correction — it's camouflage. The imperfection is still there in the clear coat; it's just temporarily hidden. The first wash with a degreasing shampoo, or the first few weeks of sun exposure, and the filler breaks down, and the swirls are right back where they started.

They Can't Match What a Machine Polisher Does

Hand-applying a scratch remover with a microfiber towel simply can't generate the level, consistent cut that a dual-action polisher can. Machine correction lets a technician control speed, pressure, and pad rotation precisely enough to remove damage evenly across an entire panel — something that's nearly impossible to replicate by hand, no matter how good the product is.

Real Correction Is a Permanent Change to the Surface

Because true paint correction physically removes the layer of clear coat holding the damage, rather than sitting on top of it, the results don't wash away or fade out over a few weeks. That's the entire difference between a shop that corrects your paint and a product that temporarily disguises it.

The Case for an Indoor, Climate-Controlled Correction

Where a correction happens matters just as much as who's doing it. Dust, pollen, humidity, and direct sunlight all interfere with a polisher's ability to work compound evenly across the paint — and swirl marks are, ironically, easiest to introduce during a rushed outdoor polishing job, not a wash.

Consistent Conditions, Every Panel

Our shop is fully enclosed and climate-controlled, which means the truck we correct on a rainy Tuesday gets the exact same working conditions as the show car we correct on a sunny Saturday. That consistency is a big part of why our results hold up under close inspection months and years later, not just at pickup.

It's also why drivers regularly make the drive in from Dobson, Elkin, and Pilot Mountain rather than booking a mobile detailer closer to home — once you've seen a proper indoor correction, it's hard to settle for anything less.

How We're Different From a Typical Detail Shop

Plenty of shops in Surry County own a polisher. What clients tell us sets us apart is everything that happens around the actual polishing.

We Pick Up the Phone

Call, text, or email and you'll hear back within 15 minutes. If we happen to miss you, we're calling back the moment we're free. Every recommendation we make starts with understanding what your paint actually needs — not steering you toward whatever package costs the most.

You'll See the Progress, Not Just the Result

We send before-and-after photos as your vehicle moves through the process, along with a text explaining what you're looking at. Clients consistently tell us this is what made the experience feel different from anywhere else they've had work done.

Our Reviews Reflect It

Over 200 five-star Google reviews later, the pattern in what people write about isn't just “great paint job” — it's the communication along the way. That's not an accident. Want to know who's actually behind that work? Meet the team on our About page.

The Equipment Behind Every Correction

We're transparent about exactly what touches your paint and why we chose it.

Professional cordless dual-action polishers give our technicians the control needed to correct paint evenly, without leaving the buffer trails or holograms that cheaper equipment tends to create — a common giveaway of a rushed correction job.

dedicated inspection lighting exposes swirl marks, etching, and fine scratches that regular shop lighting or daylight simply won't show. Without this kind of lighting, it's genuinely possible to miss damage during correction and hand a car back that still looks flawed in direct sun.

One-Step vs. Two-Step: Choosing the Right Package

We offer three levels of paint correction, built around how much damage your paint actually has and what you're hoping to get out of the service. On your consultation call, we'll ask about your paint's condition, how it looks in direct sunlight, and whether you're planning to add a ceramic coating — then point you toward the package that fits, not the most expensive one.

Two-Step Paint Correction

Starting at$799.00

Two-stage compound and polish process

Removes up to 90% of swirl marks and oxidation

Maximum clarity, depth and reflection

Ideal preparation for ceramic coating

8–9 hour service depending on vehicle size

When paint has years of accumulated swirling, oxidation, or haze, a single polishing pass usually isn't enough to fully correct it. Our Two-Step Paint Correction runs a heavier cutting compound first to remove the bulk of the damage, then follows with a finishing polish that refines the surface further, pulling out maximum depth and gloss. It's also the package we most often recommend as prep work ahead of a ceramic coating, since it leaves the cleanest possible surface for the coating to bond to.

One-Step Polish

Starting at$399.00

Removes up to 70% of swirls and oxidation

Improves paint clarity and depth

Addresses minor oxidation and haze

Strong results in a single polishing stage

For paint that's holding up reasonably well but has picked up noticeable swirling or light haze, our One-Step Polish delivers real correction — up to 70% of swirl marks and oxidation removed — in a single, efficient polishing stage. It's a strong middle ground for Surry County drivers who want a genuine improvement without committing to the full two-stage process.

Gloss Enhancement Polish

Starting at$199.00

Single-stage machine polishing

Improved gloss and clarity

Ideal pre-coating preparation

Fastest turnaround in our polishing lineup

Not every vehicle needs swirl or scratch removal — some just need the paint brought back to life. Our Gloss Enhancement Polish is a single-stage machine polish built purely to deep-clean the surface and maximize shine and clarity, without any cutting or leveling involved. It's a popular pick among Mount Airy and Elkin clients prepping their paint ahead of a wax, sealant, or ceramic coating, and it's the quickest turnaround we offer.

Not sure which one fits your car? That's exactly what the consultation call is for.

Our Step-by-Step Correction Process

We think clients should know exactly what's happening to their vehicle at every stage, so here's the full process from the moment you call to the moment you pick up your keys.

1. The Consultation Call

We ask about your paint's current condition, whether you've noticed swirling in direct sunlight, and what you're hoping to achieve — a full restoration, a quicker refresh, or prep work ahead of a coating. That conversation is what determines which package actually makes sense for your vehicle.

2. Confirming Your Appointment

Once you're booked, you'll get two texts. The first confirms your date, time, and the services you've booked, and includes a link to our Service, Payment, Inspection, and Release agreement — every client reviews and signs this before we touch a vehicle. The second is a request for a deposit, which reserves the dedicated block of shop time your car needs and goes toward your final balance.

3. Drop-Off & Walkaround Inspection

Whether you drove over from town or made the trip from Pilot Mountain, we start with a walkaround under our dedicated lighting — pointing out swirling, oxidation, or haze you might not have noticed under normal light, and giving you a realistic read on what correction can achieve. From there, your vehicle comes inside.

4. Hand Wash & Decontamination

Every vehicle gets a full hand wash with a product designed to strip old wax, sealant, and surface grime — anything that would otherwise get in the way of an accurate look at your paint's actual condition, or interfere with the correction itself.

5. Clay Bar Treatment

Next, a thorough clay bar pass lifts embedded contamination a wash alone can't reach — bonded road grime, industrial fallout, and other particles sitting in the clear coat. Skipping this step risks dragging that debris across the paint once polishing begins, so we never do.

6. Pre-Correction Panel Prep

With the paint fully clayed, we run a panel prep pass to clear away anything left over from washing and claying, leaving a completely clean surface for machine polishing to begin.

7. Cutting & Leveling — Stage One

This is where correction actually happens, and the approach shifts depending on your package.

On our Two-Step Paint Correction, this stage is dedicated entirely to heavier cutting — using a more aggressive pad and compound combination to remove as much swirling and oxidation as the paint can safely give up. It's the stage responsible for most of that 90% improvement.

On our One-Step Polish, this single stage is tuned to balance correction with finish in one pass, targeting up to 70% swirl and oxidation removal while still building strong clarity and gloss.

On our Gloss Enhancement Polish, there's no cutting stage at all — this pass is a deep-clean polish focused purely on restoring shine to paint that's already in decent shape.

We work panel by panel under inspection lighting throughout, adjusting pressure, speed, and compound based on how each section of clear coat is actually responding — paint condition varies across a single vehicle, not just between vehicles.

8. Finishing Polish — Stage Two (Two-Step Only)

Two-Step clients get a second, much gentler polishing pass after the initial cut. Where stage one is about removing damage, stage two is about refinement — smoothing out any fine marring left by the cutting compound and pushing the paint's depth and reflection as far as it will go. This second pass is what separates our Two-Step package from a single-stage polish.

9. Final Wipe-Down

Once polishing is finished, we run a dedicated panel prep product across every surface to remove leftover oils, compound, or polish residue — leaving bare, clean paint ready for inspection, or for a coating if you've booked one.

10. Inspection in Natural Light

We pull the vehicle outside and check every panel in direct daylight, in addition to our indoor lighting setup. Anything that doesn't meet our standard goes back inside for correction before we call the job finished.

11. Pickup & Walkthrough

You'll do a full walkaround with us in natural light — the same conditions where swirl marks and haze are easiest to spot — and we'll walk through aftercare so your results hold up as long as possible.

Should You Add Ceramic Coating Afterward?

Paint correction stands entirely on its own as a service. Plenty of our Surry County clients book it by itself — ahead of selling a vehicle, refreshing an older daily driver, or simply wanting their paint looking its best without adding anything on top.

That said, we do recommend a ceramic coating once correction is done. Freshly corrected paint is bare paint — nothing is stopping UV exposure, oxidation, or chemical etching from starting the same cycle of damage all over again the moment you drive off, and a coating adds a real layer of resistance against exactly that. It also changes how the paint behaves day to day: a coating's slicker surface sheds dirt and grime instead of holding onto it, which lowers the friction that causes most new swirling in the first place.

It's not a swirl-proof shield on its own — how you wash the car afterward still matters most — but it's the single biggest thing you can do to stretch your results. (Full breakdown in “How Long Does Paint Correction Last?” below.)

It's a recommendation, not a requirement — we're glad to correct your paint and send you on your way if that's what you'd rather do.

Keeping Corrected Paint Looking Its Best

The correction is only half the job — how you wash your vehicle afterward decides how long it lasts. Not every wash method is safe for freshly corrected paint; we break down which ones are in “Can I Go Through a Car Wash After Paint Correction?” below.

If you skip the ceramic coating, we recommend a quality wash and wax routine in the meantime to give the paint at least some protection.

Questions Surry County Drivers Ask Us Most

Is polishing the same thing as paint correction?

Sort of — it depends on how deep the job goes. “Polishing” is really just the general term for machine work done to a car's paint, and it can mean anything from a quick gloss boost to a full multi-stage correction. When Surry County clients ask us specifically about polishing rather than a full correction, what they're usually describing lines up closely with our One-Step Polish — a single-stage machine polish that removes a meaningful amount of swirling while restoring real clarity and shine, without the time or cost of a full two-stage correction. If that sounds like what you're picturing, that's the package to start the conversation around.

How much of the swirling and oxidation will actually come out?

That depends on your paint's condition and which package you choose. Two-Step removes up to 90%, One-Step removes up to 70%, and Gloss Enhancement isn't designed to remove either — it's focused purely on shine and clarity. We'll give you a realistic read during your consultation and inspection.

How long does paint correction last?

Paint correction doesn't wear off, but how long it stays swirl-free depends almost entirely on wash technique — typically 1–2 years with proper care, 3–5+ years when paired with a ceramic coating.

Correction is a permanent removal of the damage sitting in your clear coat, not a temporary fix that fades. New swirling shows back up because of what happens to the paint after you drive off — automatic car washes, dirty wash mitts, tunnel brushes, and abrasive drying towels are what actually put new scratches into freshly corrected paint, not the correction wearing off.

A ceramic coating doesn't stop that outright — nothing sitting on top of clear coat can prevent contact damage entirely. What it does is make the surface slicker and more chemically resistant, so dirt and grime release more easily during a wash instead of grinding in. That lower friction is what stretches results from the 1–2 year range into 3–5+ years — paired with the right wash method, which we cover next.

Can I go through a car wash after paint correction?

Hand washing is the safest option for freshly corrected paint, since it gives you full control over pressure and products. Touchless car washes are a fine backup when you're short on time — nothing physically contacts the paint, so the risk of new swirling stays low. Tunnel washes with brushes are the one method we tell every client to avoid: those brushes touch hundreds of cars a week and carry grit between them, and it takes just one pass to undo hours of correction work.

Do I have to get a ceramic coating after paint correction?

No. Correction works as a standalone service, and plenty of clients choose exactly that. We recommend a coating because it makes your results easier to maintain long-term — not because correction needs it to hold — but the decision is yours.

Will this fix rock chips or a deep scratch?

Not through the polishing process itself, but we're not sending you elsewhere either — we handle minor rock chips in-house with touch-up paint. Correction handles everything sitting in the clear coat (swirls, oxidation, haze), touch-up paint handles small chips, and anything more severe than that is a bodywork repair.

Do I need correction before a ceramic coating?

If your paint has existing swirl marks or scratches, yes — a coating locks in whatever the surface looks like underneath it, so uncorrected damage will still be visible once it's coated. We'll assess your paint honestly and tell you if correction is actually necessary before recommending it.

How long will my car be at the shop?

Two-Step typically runs 8–9 hours depending on vehicle size; One-Step and Gloss Enhancement move faster. We'll give you a specific window on your consultation call.

How much does paint correction cost?

It depends on your vehicle's size, your paint's condition, and which of our three packages fits what you need — which is why the starting prices shown here are followed by a vehicle-specific quote. What we can tell you is that every quote is based on an honest look at your actual paint, not a one-size-fits-all rate, and there are no hidden fees or surprise charges once we've given you a number. What to Ask Any Shop Before You Book

Package details matter, but so does who's doing the work. Whether you're considering us or another shop — in Mount Airy, near Pilot Mountain, near Elkin, near Dobson, or elsewhere in Surry County — these three questions are worth asking before you commit.

“How will you actually see the swirl marks you're supposed to remove?” Standard shop lighting hides most of what needs correcting. We work under dedicated inspection lighting for exactly this reason — ask any shop what their setup looks like.

“What's realistic for my paint specifically?” A shop that gives you the same percentage-removed answer for every car isn't looking closely at yours. Every consultation we do starts with an honest read of your actual paint condition.

“What should I do differently after this?” You should leave with real aftercare guidance, not just a shiny car and a handshake. Ask what washing method they recommend and why.

Paint Correction Across Surry County

If you've typed “paint correction near me” into your phone anywhere in Surry County, there's a good chance our shop is who came up — and there's a reason drivers keep making the drive from all over the county instead of stopping at whatever's closest.

Mount Airy

This is home base, and it's where the bulk of our daily-driver work comes from — commuter cars, work trucks, and everything in between picking up the same everyday buildup of swirling and dulled clarity that comes with regular use. If you're local, you've probably driven right past our shop without realizing what happens inside it.

Elkin

Between the vineyard roads and the wooded stretches leading into town, Elkin paint sees more than its share of tree sap, pollen, and fine dust working its way into the clear coat over a season. None of that shows up as one dramatic scratch — it just slowly flattens the shine, which is exactly the kind of gradual damage paint correction is built to reverse.

Dobson

Dobson drivers dealing with farm equipment, gravel driveways, and the dust that comes with rural roads know the drill: paint that looks fine from a distance but shows every bit of that grime and haze once you catch it in direct sun. Between the vineyards and the farmland, it's some of the most common paint correction work we see.

Pilot Mountain

Between the backroads leading up to Pilot Mountain State Park and the tree cover surrounding them, paint out this way tends to pick up a steady mix of sap, pollen, and fine grit that dulls the finish faster than drivers expect. It's a big part of why so many local clients end up booking a correction before they ever consider a ceramic coating.
