Car Odor Removal in Mount Airy, NC

Chlorine Dioxide Odor Elimination for Surry County Drivers

If your car smells like cigarette smoke, wet dog, spilled milk, or something you can't quite name, you already know an air freshener isn't going to fix it. Bobbitt Auto Detailing & Ceramic Coatings removes odors from cars, trucks, and SUVs for drivers across Mount Airy and Surry County, using a chlorine dioxide treatment that goes after the source of the smell instead of covering it up. Every vehicle is treated inside our shop.

Drivers come from across the county, including Dobson, Pilot Mountain, and Elkin, because we explain exactly how the work is done, tell you honestly what result to expect, and never promise perfection.

Odor treatment is one specialized part of the detailing care available at our Mount Airy shop.

What Is Professional Car Odor Removal?

Professional car odor removal is a deep-cleaning and gas-treatment process that eliminates the particles causing a smell in your vehicle's interior instead of covering them with fragrance. Smoke, spills, pets, and moisture leave microscopic particles on every surface and soak into seats, carpet, the headliner, and the ventilation system, which is why a car can smell fine for an hour after you hang a new air freshener and awful again by lunch.

Our approach has two parts. First, we remove what we can reach by hand with a chlorine dioxide-infused enzyme cleaner made for vehicle cabin odors. Second, a chlorine dioxide treatment reaches what hands and cleaner can't: the foam inside your seats, the carpet fibers, and the air handling system that moves air through your cabin every time you turn on the fan.

Nothing about our process is designed to hide a smell. If an odor is still there when we think we're finished, we'd rather tell you and treat the vehicle again than send you home with a car that smells like perfume for three days. Surry County's humid summers don't help either: a closed-up vehicle sitting in July heat is a perfect place for a smell to settle in.

Car Odors We Remove

We treat the odors that drivers across Surry County call us about most. Here's how we think about each one.

Cigarette, Cigar, Pipe, Vape, and Marijuana Smoke

Smoke is the odor we're asked about most, and one of the hardest to remove. It leaves a film on every surface and works into the headliner, carpet, and vents. Whether it's cigarettes, cigars, vapes, or marijuana, yours or left behind by a previous owner, the approach is the same: clean the interior thoroughly, then treat the cabin and ventilation system with chlorine dioxide.

How much we can remove depends on how long and how heavily smoking went on. A few months is a very different job than ten years. Heavy smoke costs extra and lowers the odds of complete removal, which we'll tell you plainly before we start.

Pet Odors: Dog, Wet Dog, Cat Urine, Accidents, and Dander

Pet odor in a car comes down to getting rid of what the animal left behind: the oily, musty smell of a wet dog after a trip to the creek, cat urine, an accident on the back seat, or dander and hair that never quite goes away. Because those smells live in the seats, carpet, and air system, a surface clean alone rarely lasts.

If an animal rides with you every day, we'll talk through what to expect. A treated vehicle that gets a muddy dog in it next week is going to smell like a muddy dog again, and we'd rather set that expectation upfront than just take your money.

Vomit, Urine, Body Odor, and Gym or Locker-Room Smells

Few things ruin a car faster than a sick kid or a rough night out. Vomit is one of the most common calls we get, along with urine from a child or pet accident, strong body odor, and the unmistakable smell of gym clothes left in the car. These odors are organic, which means they keep breaking down and smelling worse for days if they're not dealt with.

We take vehicles with vomit, urine, fecal matter, and blood, within reason. If the situation needs to be handled as a biohazard, that affects the price, and we'll explain how before we start. Call us first so we can talk through what you're dealing with.

Food and Drink Odors

Spilled milk, a fish dinner, last night's takeout, a coffee in a cup holder, rotten fruit under a seat, or groceries forgotten in a hot trunk all produce strong odors because they're biological: they rot, ferment, and keep getting worse in a closed vehicle. Milk is especially stubborn. It soaks deep into carpet and seat foam, sours, and smells worse every day it's left, so the sooner you call, the better the odds of a full result.

Musty and Mildew Smells

A musty smell in your car is usually moisture: a window left cracked in the rain, a wet carpet that never quite dried, or damp clothes left in a bag. Many people first notice it when they turn on the AC and a stale smell comes out of the vents.

We can treat musty and mildew smells, and the chlorine dioxide reaches the ventilation system where much of that smell lives. But a musty smell can also be a sign of mold, which we can't treat. See What We Do and Don't Take below.

Rodent Droppings and Nest Smells

Mice and other rodents like to nest in the engine bay and the air intake, and the smell can work its way into the cabin. If you've found droppings or a nest, we'll talk through what we're dealing with before we start, because the first step is making sure the source is gone. Once it is, we can treat the odor left in the cabin and ventilation system.

Perfume, Air Freshener, Fishing, and Sports-Gear Smells

Not every bad smell is something gross. Sometimes it's too much perfume or cologne, an air freshener that went from pleasant to overpowering, or the lingering smell of a used car's previous owner. Fragrance is stubborn because it's designed to stick, and you can't cover one smell with another.

Bait, a wet towel in a hot car, a bag of damp sports equipment, or boots that smell like feet after a long day leave their mark too. These are the odors most likely to come back if the cause stays in the car, so we'll treat the interior and give you honest advice on keeping the gear from putting the smell back.

What We Do and Don't Take

We take cars, trucks, and SUVs with a wide range of odors, including vomit, urine, fecal matter, blood, and, within reason, dead animals. We do not take vehicles with standing water in them or any visible mold.

Vehicles We Take

If it smells and it doesn't have mold or standing water, we can likely help. That includes messy situations many people assume nobody will take: bodily fluids, pet accidents, and heavy smoke. If you're not sure whether your situation qualifies, call us and describe it, and we'll tell you honestly before you drive over.

Vehicles We Can't Take: Mold and Standing Water

Mold is a different problem than odor and needs a different solution. A vehicle with visible mold or standing water needs to be dried out and remediated by a specialist before odor removal makes sense. Treating the smell of a mold problem without fixing the mold would just waste your money. If we find either at drop-off, we show you, decline the job, and refund your deposit in full.

How to Tell Mold From a Musty Smell

Mold is typically raised, fuzzy, slimy, or puffy, and often dark or brightly colored: green, black, blue, or even bright red. A musty smell with no visible growth, like a damp-carpet smell, is something we can often treat. If you can see growth or there's water sitting in the vehicle, we can't. When you call, tell us what you see and we'll help you figure out which side of the line you're on.

Why We Use Chlorine Dioxide Instead of Ozone

We use chlorine dioxide, and only chlorine dioxide. Both chlorine dioxide and ozone are gas treatments that break down odor-causing compounds. We chose chlorine dioxide because it can be recirculated through the cabin and the ventilation system with the vehicle running, which is where much of a smell lives.

We do not use ozone generators. The EPA cautions that ozone can damage the lungs and that ozone generators sold as air cleaners are not a proven way to control indoor air pollution (see the EPA's page on ozone generators).

Chlorine dioxide is a strong oxidizer, and we treat it with respect. After each treatment we roll the windows down, mist water inside the vehicle, and air it out for about two hours before we call you. A light chlorine smell can linger and fades as the vehicle airs out. On heavy-odor jobs there is a small chance of fading on some interior materials, and we'll tell you before we start if your vehicle is at risk. If you or your passengers have asthma or other breathing sensitivities, ask us any questions before pickup.

Products & Equipment We Trust

For the cleaning step, we use a chlorine dioxide-infused enzyme cleaner formulated for the cabin of a vehicle. For the treatment itself, we use a professional chlorine dioxide treatment that circulates through the entire interior and the ventilation and air conditioning system. We are transparent about our products and processes, ensuring every step contributes directly to eliminating the odor rather than hiding it.

Our Car Odor Removal Package & Pricing

We offer one package because the process that works is the same for every vehicle. What changes is how much attention your vehicle needs, which is reflected in the price.

What Affects the Price of Professional Car Odor Removal

People often ask what professional car deodorizing costs, and the honest answer is that it depends on the vehicle. Most vehicles fall between $499 and $899, and jobs with heavy smoke or biohazards can reach $999. Here is exactly what moves the price:

FactorWhy it affects the price
Type of odorSmoke, spoiled food, and bodily fluids require more work than a light odor
How long it has been thereA recent spill is much easier to eliminate than a smell that has been in the vehicle for years
Number of treatmentsSome vehicles need more than one round of chlorine dioxide treatment
Condition of the interiorThe more we have to do before the treatment begins, the more time it takes
Vehicle sizeA full-size truck or SUV takes more time and product than a compact car
Heavy smokeTakes the most time and effort to remove, so it costs extra
BiohazardsBodily fluids and other biohazards are treated differently and can add to the price

A 10% deposit holds your appointment and goes toward your total, with the rest due at pickup. If we find visible mold or standing water at drop-off, we decline the job and refund your deposit in full. You'll get a clear number on your consultation call.

How Long Does Car Odor Removal Take?

Car odor removal at our shop takes three full business days. That's a real answer, not a marketing line, and it's built around doing the job properly instead of rushing it. Your vehicle will be dry and ready to drive when you pick it up.

Those three days give us time to clean the interior, let everything dry thoroughly, inspect the vehicle, run the chlorine dioxide treatment (90 to 180 minutes with the vehicle running), ventilate it, and inspect it again to decide whether another round is needed. If a second treatment is needed, the time is already built in. Rushing the drying and the second look is how odors come back.

Will the Odor Come Back? What to Realistically Expect

We eliminate odors rather than covering them up, so they generally stay gone unless the source returns. Severe, long-term odors can sit deeper than a single treatment reaches, which is why we set a 90% planning estimate and re-treat free within 30 days.

Why We Don't Promise Perfection

We tell every client to expect about 90% of the odor to be eliminated. That is a planning estimate we use to set honest expectations, not a measured result or a guarantee. Fabric, material, odor type, and how long the smell has been in the vehicle all affect the outcome, and severe, long-term odors like cigarette smoke lower the odds of complete removal. Every client signs an expectation agreement acknowledging this before we start.

Our 30-Day Re-Treatment Promise

If the odor comes back within 30 days, we treat the vehicle again at no additional charge.

Air Fresheners and DIY Odor Bombs vs. Professional Car Odor Removal

Most solutions you can buy at a store cover up or mask an odor instead of eliminating it, so your car smells better for a day or two and then the original smell comes back.

Hanging air fresheners, sprays, vent clips, and baking soda all have a place for light, everyday freshness. The problem is that they don't reach the source. Smoke particles in the headliner, spilled milk in seat foam, and moisture in the ventilation system aren't going anywhere because a scented product was placed nearby. A professional treatment cleans the interior, replaces the cabin air filter, then treats the cabin and ventilation system, where odors keep coming from.

If you've already tried a few things and the smell keeps returning, that's usually the sign the source hasn't been reached. That's the situation our service is built for.

Our Car Odor Removal Process: From Your First Call to Pickup

We want every client to know exactly what they're paying for and what to expect before, during, and after their appointment. Here's the process, start to finish.

Step One: Your Consultation Call

Before we recommend anything, we ask questions. What does the vehicle smell like? How long has it been there? Did something spill, leak, or get wet? Has anyone smoked in it? We also ask whether you've seen visible mold or standing water, the two situations we can't take on.

We'll give you an honest picture of the result to expect, including our 90% planning estimate, and explain what could push it higher or lower for your vehicle. We'll also remind you to pick up a new cabin air filter before drop-off.

Step Two: Booking Confirmation & Vehicle Agreement

The moment your appointment is scheduled, you receive two text messages. The first confirms your date, time, service, and the pricing we discussed, with a link to our combined Service, Payment, Inspection, and Release agreement, which includes our expectation agreement. That agreement acknowledges that we don't promise perfection or that any odor can be fully removed.

The second text requests the 10% deposit, which goes toward your total. If anything about the vehicle changes the scope once we see it in person, we talk it through with you before doing anything else.

Step Three: Drop-Off Day & Vehicle Inspection

When you arrive, we walk around your vehicle together and talk through the history of the odor. This is when you hand us the new cabin air filter.

The walkaround is also our check for standing water or visible mold. If we find either, we show you, explain why, decline the job, and refund your deposit in full. Otherwise, we pull the vehicle into our shop, where it stays for the next three business days.

Step Four: Prep, Deep Scrub, and Seat & Carpet Treatment

We remove personal items and floor mats and vacuum thoroughly. A forgotten gym bag, a french fry under a seat rail, or old crumbs in a seat seam can keep an odor alive after everything else is treated, so we want the source gone first.

Next comes a hands-on scrub with a chlorine dioxide-infused enzyme cleaner formulated for vehicle cabin odors. We work through the dash, center console, steering wheel, door panels, cup holders, door jambs, grab handles, foot pedals, and every leather and vinyl surface, the places hands, spills, and sweat touch every day. We also gently clean the headliner, avoiding over-saturation, because it is a major odor collector, especially with smoke.

Fabric holds odor longer than any other surface, so we shampoo the seats and carpets and allow plenty of time for everything to dry. Proper drying is one of the main reasons the job takes three business days.

Step Five: Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Important: you must provide the new cabin air filter before we begin this service. Any auto parts store can look up the correct filter with your vehicle's VIN, and it only takes a few minutes.

We remove your old filter and install the new one. Your cabin air filter is part of the path air takes into your vehicle, and an old one that has soaked up smoke, moisture, or pet odor can keep pushing that smell back into the cabin after everything else has been treated.

Step Six: Chlorine Dioxide Treatment

This is the step that does the heavy lifting. We set off a chlorine dioxide treatment inside the vehicle and keep the vehicle running while it recirculates through the cabin and the entire ventilation and air conditioning system, anywhere from 90 to 180 minutes depending on how severe the odor is. Running the vehicle pushes the treatment through the vents and the air handling system, the places hand-cleaning can't reach.

Step Seven: Ventilation & Airing Out

When the treatment is done, we roll the windows down and mist water inside the vehicle. We then leave the windows down for about two hours, and we don't call you until that is finished and the vehicle is dry.

Step Eight: Final Smell Check & Quality Inspection

Before we call you, we check whether the odor is gone or needs another round. If it does, we run another treatment, and the three business days leave room to do it twice. We don't release a vehicle until the odor has been removed as much as we can get it.

Step Nine: Pickup Day

When we let you know your vehicle is ready, it is dry and has been aired out. We do a walkaround together, answer your questions, and go over how to keep the odor from finding its way back.

Step Ten: 30-Day Follow-Up

We follow up after pickup to check how the vehicle smells. If the odor returns within 30 days, we treat the vehicle again at no additional charge.

Keeping Odors Away After Treatment

Getting the odor eliminated is half the equation. Keeping it away is the other half, and most of it is common sense. Deal with spills as soon as they happen, don't leave food or wet gear in the vehicle, and if you have a leak, fix the cause before it turns into a smell. If an odor returns within 30 days, call us.

Where Odor Removal Fits With Our Other Services

Odor removal is a dedicated service built around eliminating smells, which makes it different from a general clean. Our interior detailing in Mount Airy is the right choice when the vehicle needs a thorough clean and refresh, and car odor removal is the right choice when the main problem is a smell. Once the smell is gone, regular interior detailing is a good way to keep the interior fresh.

Drivers sometimes ask about the outside once the inside is taken care of. Our exterior detailing keeps the paint clean and glossy, paint correction removes swirls and scratches, and ceramic coating protects the finish for years. All of it is done indoors, by the same team, with the same attention to detail.

Car Odor Removal FAQs

How much does professional car odor removal cost?

Car odor removal starts at $499 plus tax. Most vehicles fall between $499 and $899, and jobs with heavy smoke or biohazards can reach $999. The price depends on the type of odor, how long it has been there, the size and condition of the vehicle, and how many treatments it needs. A 10% deposit holds your spot.

How long does car odor removal take?

We need your vehicle for three full business days. That covers cleaning, drying, the chlorine dioxide treatment, ventilation, and a second inspection to decide whether another round is needed.

Will the smell come back after the treatment?

Odors we eliminate generally stay gone unless the source returns, but severe, long-term odors like cigarette smoke may not clear completely in one treatment. Our planning estimate is that about 90% of the odor will be eliminated, which is an expectation, not a guarantee. If the smell returns within 30 days, we treat the vehicle again at no additional charge.

Why do you use chlorine dioxide instead of ozone?

Chlorine dioxide can be recirculated through the cabin and ventilation system with the vehicle running, which is where much of a smell lives, and it is the method we were trained on. The EPA cautions that ozone can damage the lungs and that ozone generators are not a proven way to control indoor air pollution, so we do not use them. On heavy-odor jobs there is a small chance of fading on some interior materials, and we will tell you before we start if your vehicle is at risk.

When can I use my car after the treatment?

We call you once the vehicle has aired out with the windows down for about two hours and is dry. A light chlorine smell may linger and fades as the vehicle airs out. We follow the manufacturer's directions for use and ventilation. If you or your passengers have asthma or other breathing sensitivities, ask us any questions before pickup.

Can't I just use an air freshener or an odor bomb myself?

Most store-bought products cover up or mask an odor, so the smell returns within a day or two. A professional treatment cleans the interior first, then treats the cabin and ventilation system, which is where odors keep coming from.

Can you get cigarette or marijuana smoke out of my car?

Yes. Smoke is one of the most common odors we treat and one of the hardest to remove, so results depend on how long and how heavily the vehicle was smoked in. Heavy smoke costs extra because it takes more time and sometimes more than one treatment.

Can you remove vomit, urine, or pet accident smells?

Yes. We take vehicles with vomit, urine, fecal matter, blood, and, within reason, dead animals. Call us first so we can talk through what you're dealing with. The price can change if the situation has to be handled as a biohazard.

Can you remove a musty smell, and do you treat mold?

We treat musty and mildew smells, but we do not take vehicles with visible mold or standing water. Mold is typically raised, fuzzy, slimy, or puffy and often dark green, black, blue, or bright red. If you see anything like that, a mold remediation specialist is the right call first.

Do I need to bring my own cabin air filter?

Yes. We require you to provide a new cabin air filter before we begin, and any auto parts store can look up the right one with your VIN. We remove your old filter and install the new one as part of the service.
